Jimmie Green, 78, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, September 2, 2016 with family by his side.
Jimmie was born on October 15, 1937 in Mt. Storm, West Virginia, the son of the late Albert and Ethel Green. After graduating from Bayard High School, class of 1956, he attended West Virginia University obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. Jimmie dedicated a large portion of his life serving in third world countries as a volunteer with International Voluntary Services and then as a Foreign Service Officer with the United States Agency for International Development. After returning to the United States, he operated the family farm, and later moved his family to Winchester, VA where he worked as a carpenter building custom homes. Jimmie spent the last twenty years working at the Sunnyside Food Lion, retiring earlier this year. Jimmie was a dedicated and devoted member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church serving many years as President of the United Methodist Men, while also volunteering with Heart Havens, Kairos Prison Ministry, Wycliffe Bible Translators, and countless other faith based organizations.
He was a loving father, grandfather, and friend to many. Jimmie can be remembered for his kind heart, his love of food (especially desserts), but most of all for his service to Christ, his Lord and Savior. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jimmie is survived by his daughter, Rachel Green and her significant other, Tony Lucas of Alexandria, Virginia; two sons, Daniel Green of McLean, Virginia and Timothy Green and his wife, Lynda of Stephens City, Virginia; four grandchildren, Brandon, Christian, Cameron and Thomas; sister, Betty Green also of Winchester, as well as many extended family members and close friends.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Elwood Green and a sister, Flora Mae Green.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016 with Reverend Kirk Nave officiating at Braddock Street United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Winchester District United Methodist Men, 115 Wolfe Street, Winchester, Virginia, 22601.
