Jesse Earl Wismer, 90, of Winchester, Virginia (formerly of Fairfax) passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center surrounded by his family and friends.
Mr. Wismer was born in 1927 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Jesse Earl Wismer, Sr. and Susan Petrie Wismer. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during WWII and the Korean conflict as a 1st Class Petty Officer Carpenter’s Mate. During his naval career, while assigned to the USS General W.A. Mann he made a world cruise in 1951. Mr. Wismer was a police officer with the Arlington County Virginia Police Department, retiring in 1977 after 20 years of service. He retired as a District Supervisor for the Operations Division. After his retirement he worked for the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of the Winchester/Frederick County Conservation Club, Winchester American Legion, Winchester Eagles, Arlington County Police Beneficiary Association, a former chairman of the Arlington County Retired Employees Association, and former member of the Winchester Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. Mr. Wismer was an avid hunter and fisherman that enjoyed the outdoor life. For 25+ years he volunteered faithfully at Leetown, WV Geological at the fish and game department, helping many handicap individuals and veterans to fish. He enjoyed gardening, providing his Fairfax and Winchester friends/family with fresh vegetables. Mr. Wismer was a member of Burnt Factory United Methodist Church.
Mr. Wismer married Lois Amy Campbell on March 21, 1953 in Lebanon Church, Virginia.
Surviving with his beloved wife of 64 years is daughter, Teresa Wismer of Stephens City, Virginia; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Barron of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; sister, Florence Tesch of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Wismer was preceded in death by an infant child.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 2 pm to 3 pm on Sunday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel followed by a Memorial Service at 3 pm with Pastor Steve Melester and Pastor Larry Miller officiating. A continued time of fellowship and food will follow the service at Omps Reception Center, Amherst Chapel.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Joe Shanholtz, Jim Everson, Blaine Rockwell and retired members of the Arlington Police Department.
