Jerry Lane Mills, 68, of Clear Brook, Virginia passed away Thursday, August 20, 2020, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Jerry was born on July 4, 1952 in Washington, DC, son of Irene Russell Mills and Osborne R. Mills, Jr.; beloved grandson of Amy and Earl Russell. He graduated from James Wood High School, Class of 1970, and always a “farm boy” at heart. Jerry was owner/operator of Jerry’s Tire & Auto in Winchester for 20 years, retiring in 2016. In earlier years, Jerry was very active in playing softball and various organizations, but most enjoyable were the years coaching both of his sons in Little League Baseball. He was a member of Brucetown United Methodist Church.
Jerry loved hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons, taking many trips over the years. Time spent with family was Jerry’s greatest passion, especially the family trips to Virginia Beach most summers and other destinations.

He married Barbara Jean Ritenour, his forever Valentine, on February 14, 1969 in Brucetown, Virginia.

Surviving with his wife of 51 years and his parents are two sons, Bradley Lane Mills (Tammi) and Jason Matthew Mills; three beloved grandchildren, Mattie Lane Mills, Jeremy Lane Mills, and Rocky Wade Mills; sister, Christine Drake; and many loving nieces, a nephew, cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and devoted friends.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and doctors at Blue Ridge Hospice for the loving care given to Jerry over the last months, true angels on Earth.

All services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry’s memory to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, Virginia 22601.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Mills passing. My condolences go out to his wife and children. I have great memories of Coach Mills coaching his son Jason and my son Caleb. Those were fun years with a really really good baseball team with an excellent coach. Jerry was a good honest man. He will be missed by many.

Jerry was always a jolly soul. He and Jeannie worked side by side in their business. Jerry went out of his way to. help me out. Rest In Peace . Jeannie and family you are in my prayers.

I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of Jerry. I will remember him as a happy go lucky and always having a smile on his face. My thoughts and prayers go with each and everyone of you. Rest in peace my friend

Jeremiah 16:16 “Behold, I am sending for many fishers, declares the Lord, and they shall catch them. And afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks. The Lord carried home a man of many skills Thursday morning. Not only was he a fisherman and a hunter but he was a farmer of his land. Sadly I wasn't lucky enough to have met him in person but I heard many stories of the things he had accomplished in life. I'd like to believe that in his later years although his time in the woods and on the water were limited that he was able to hold onto the feeling behind the enjoyment he had while hunting and fishing. I believe Robert Ruark said it best when he said... “'The best thing about hunting and fishing,' the Old Man said, 'is that you don't have to actually do it to enjoy it. You can go to bed every night thinking about how much fun you had twenty years ago, and it all comes back clear as moonlight.'”. Your family and loved ones are in my prayers.
