Jerome H. Greenberg, M.D., Col. U.S. Army, Ret.
Dr. Jerome Herbert Greenberg, 86, formerly of Trenton, New Jersey, died March 30, at his home in Winchester, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Tracy Reid Hitt Greenberg, who passed away February 17, 2009. Devoted father to daughter Betsy Wones of Cincinnati, Ohio, sons Jerry Greenberg of Madison, Wisconsin and Jim Greenberg of Mountville, Pennsylvania, and loving grandfather of Rebecca Jahnigen, Joe Jahnigen, Katherine Wones, Teresa Wones, Michael Wones, Daniel Wones, Alex Greenberg, Chris Greenberg, Hannah Greenberg, Ellie Greenberg and great-grandson Mykell James.
Dr. Greenberg was born September 1, 1923, in Trenton to the late Bernard and Bessie V. Greenberg. He attended New York University and then earned a medical degree from Georgetown University. He practiced medicine in Trenton before joining the U.S. Army in 1941. As an army physician and public health officer, he did tours of duty at Ft. Detrick in Frederick, Maryland, Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and with the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office as Chief of Preventive Medicine in Washington D.C. before his retirement from the military in 1973. His dedication to and expertise in the areas of public health and communicable diseases made him a leader in those fields.
Following his retirement from the Army, he became Health Commissioner for Indianapolis/Marion County, and then served as Deputy Health Commissioner for the State of Texas.
Interment will be July 7, 2010 at Arlington National Cemetery.
