Jennifer Lynn Shaffer, 48 of Stephens City, VA passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at Winchester Medical Center.

Jen was born in 1974 in Berkley County, WV to Calvin Craig and Betty Jean Custer. She was a graduate of Musselman High School and worked at Martins Grocery Store in Stephens City as a Department Lead. Jen loved puzzles, crosswords, word searches and Style Dot Jewelry. She loved animals and especially animals on their farm.

She married Herbert Shaffer on April 20, 2017 in Stephens City, VA.

Jen is survived by her husband, Herbert; daughters, Brittany N. Skaggs of Winfield, WV, Carleen A. Detwiler of Stephens City, VA and Jessica A. Bailey (Thomas A.) of Chesapeake, VA; sons, Donald J. Detwiler, III of Harrisonburg, VA, Herbert Shaffer, II (Jeanette) of Gilbert, AZ, Jeromy G. Shaffer of Inwood, WV and Robert C. Shaffer (Tory L.) of York County, VA; grandchildren, Dorian, Ayden, Corwyn, Preston, Natalie, Benjamin and Jacob Shaffer; brother, Michael “Mike” Custer (Stacey) of Glengary, WV and her canine companion, Sally Mae.

A visitation will be Tuesday, May 3, 2022 from 6pm to 8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be private.

Jennifer was very kind and accepted us as family without any hesitation. (I would have advised her to be a little more hesitant with our crazy family, LOL.) Jennifer was always happy to see us when we flew in for the Christmas holiday and she cooked the perfect home comforting Christmas dinner. Jennifer, your smile and warm heart will be missed greatly!

I did not know Jen but have always considered the Shafers a part of my family. I am saddened by their loss and the passing of what was obvious to be a very special and kind person. What the world needs is more people like Jen, and we're all less for losing her so young.

My first day of work Jen looked right at my name tag turned away and then proceeded to call me Kathy. That became our own little joke. The moment I met her I felt I knew her all my life. My condolences to the family, she was a strong woman and friend. "Saying goodbye isn't for us. Instead, I will say that I look forward to seeing my friend again, each time I am reminded of her through a phrase, a joke, even an article of clothing or jewelry. These are the things that will keep us close despite death."
