Janet Schroder Maddex died at the age of 102 on January 10, 2017, at Winchester Medical Center. She was the widow of the late Hunter J. Maddex.
Janet was born August 15, 1914, in Martinsburg, the daughter of the late Amy Glover and John L. Schroder. She graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1931 and Shepherd College in 1935. She represented Shepherd College twice as a princess in the Apple Blossom Festival. After graduation she taught English at Martinsburg High School.
Janet married Hunter Maddex on August 19, 1936, in Martinsburg, WV.
A long time member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church, Janet was active in the Wesley Sunday School Class for many years and later the Jubilee Fellowship Class.
For many years she followed Handley athletics and spent time with Hunter’s “boys” at the annual Handley’s Hunter Maddex Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Jo LaFollette and her husband Dick of Chattanooga, TN; two grandsons Chip Sirbaugh and wife Donna of Winchester and Craig Sirbaugh and wife Ally of Hagerstown, MD; five great-grandchildren, Noah, Rosser and Jackson Sirbaugh of Winchester and Lacey and Braden Sirbaugh of Hagerstown, MD; a niece Janet G. Stephens, who was like a second daughter, of Martinsburg, WV; a nephew John L. Schroder, III of Beckley, WV, and a niece Bobbe McClure of Van Horn, TX.
She was preceded in death by her sister Frances S. Morris and her brother John L. Schroder, Jr.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 12, 2017, at Omps Amherst Chapel from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
A funeral service will be held at Braddock Street United Methodist Church on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
