Janet M. Konopa, 89, passed away peacefully at her son’s home in Winchester, Virginia, Monday, August 3, 2026.
She was born February 8, 1937, in Neptune, New Jersey, to the late James V. and Agnes Q. Gallagher. She was predeceased by her brothers James and Richard, her son Kevin, and her ex-husband, Michael Konopa, with whom she remained friends until his passing.
Janet was formerly a resident of Round Hill, VA. in Loudoun County, where she raised twelve children with her husband Michael while renovating their Victorian era home.
Janet received her LPN degree in nursing in 1977 then began working nights at Loudoun Memorial Hospital. In 1984, with five children still at home and while working nights full time, she went back to school at Shenandoah University to earn her bachelor’s degree as a Registered Nurse. She moved to the Winchester area in 2004 to be closer to her children, then retired from Loudoun Memorial Hospital as a supervisor in 2005.
Janet was known by all who met her as a cheerful loving soul with an excellent sense of humor. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She especially enjoyed watching the little ones learn to swim in her pool. She also liked tinkering in her flower gardens, doing puzzles, and playing with her dogs. She was a devout Catholic. She found peace and joy in attending Mass regularly, conversing with priests, holding prayer sessions with her friends and children, and participating in Adoration.
She is survived by eleven children: Michael, Kathryn, Kirsten, Otto, Theresa, Agnes, Marianne, Christopher, Karl, Fredericka, and Paul, as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She will also be missed by life-long friends, Pat Gallagher, Joann Donnelly, and Betty Wolford.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 6pm to 8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 15, 2025, at 12:30pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Janet’s name to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church of Winchester, or Blue Ridge Hospice.
