Janet Gladys Makowsky, 86, of Stephens City, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on January 29, 1940, in Irvington, New Jersey, Janet was the daughter of the late Joseph F. Kelly and Bessie M. Kelly (maiden name Beckert). She was a graduate of Irvington High School.
Janet worked for many years as a dedicated salesclerk at Woodward & Lothrop in Fairfax, Virginia, before retiring.

Janet was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose family meant the world to her. She cherished her annual family beach vacations to Cherry Grove, South Carolina, and found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A faithful woman, Janet was an active member of St. Leo Catholic Church in Inwood, West Virginia, where she dearly loved her church community and friends.

She is survived by her loving husband of over 65 years, Joseph Makowsky, Jr., whom she married on June 10, 1961, in Orange, New Jersey.
Janet is also survived by her two daughters, Deb Reed (Terry) and Kelly Watson (Ron); nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Hartless (Rob), and her brother, Robert “Bob” Kelly.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel. An additional hour of visitation will be held on Monday, October 19, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Leo Catholic Church in Inwood, WV prior to the service at 12pm. Interment will be in St. Leo Catholic Church Cemetery, Inwood, WV. A reception will be held following the service at the church.
