James Thomas Oliver, 93, of Winchester, VA, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
Jim was born in 1931 in Lexington, KY, the son of the late Wilmer and Margaret Oliver. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, Butler University, The University of Tennessee Medical Units, and did post-doctoral work at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, earning his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and PhD in Pharmacology. Jim retired in 1996 after 32 years with Boehringer Ingelheim where he was Senior Scientist/PhD Pharmacologist and then Director of Licensing. He was a member of Middlebury Congregational Church in CT. Jim was a volunteer with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and a member of the Lake Anna Advisory Committee, representing Spotsylvania County. He also volunteered with the Lake Anna Civic Association and managed the Fireworks Program and Navigation Aids.
Jim married Kay Wright Oliver on November 17, 1956. They moved to Canada in 1964, to Connecticut in 1978 and Virginia in 1996. Jim is survived by Kay; children, Thomas Wright Oliver (Suzy) of Winchester, VA, Catherine Louise Champ (Jerry) of Belton, SC, James Wright Oliver (Darcy) of Brasstown, NC; grandchildren, Elizabeth Champ Sluga (Rob) of Charlotte, NC, Jennifer Champ Martins (Dan) of Mooresville, NC, Jeffrey Thomas Champ (Valerie) of Austin, TX, Janine Lynn Oliver (Greg) of Denver, CO, Andrew Thomas Oliver (Camille) of Charlestown, MA and Mitchell James Oliver (Rose) of Paonia, CO and great-grandchildren, Henry, Emma, Elliott, Margaret, Logan, Margot, and Shay.
A memorial service will be held for Jim on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 3pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, 1600 Amherst Street, Winchester, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Jim to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Suite #405, Winchester, VA 22601 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
