James Robert Russell

James Robert Russell, 91 ½ , passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 05,2011 in Winchester, Virginia.

He was born in Grimes, Virginia in 1919, the son of the late DK and Lucy Russell.

He graduated a FFA member and Valedictorian of the Class of 1939 from Stephens City High School, Stephens City, Virginia.

He married Colleen Bageant on April 18, 1942 and they have been happily married for 69 years.

He is survived by three daughters Karen Belford and husband Robert of Winchester, Virginia, Mary Jane Dean and husband Paul of Stephens City, Virginia, and Colleen Elizabeth Smith and husband David of Winchester, Virginia, Brothers Henry “Bud” Russell, Patrick Russell both of Clear Brook, Virginia and Charles Russell of Winchester Virginia.

He is the Grandfather of Robbie Belford and his wife Karen of Middlebourne, West Virginia, Trish Moreland of Stephens City, Virginia, Dawn Brunk and husband Justin of Alexandria, Virginia, David Smith and wife Jenna of Winchester, Virginia and Jamie Smith and friend Kristina Murphy of Stephens City, Virginia.

He is the Great Grandfather of Brent Moreland, Hannah Smith and Jackson Brunk.

He served in the Army as a Medic from 1945 through 1946. He was an orchardist who guided DK Russell and Sons for many years. He was also a farmer.

He was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

He served his community on The Frederick County Board of Supervisors and was a very active member of the Stonewall Ruritan Club for 57 years. He was director of Green Inc., Southern States Coop, Virginia Farm Bureau, Winchester Cold Storage and Winchester Equipment Company. He was a member of the Virginia State Horticultural and Old Time Apple Growers Societies.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Swimley and brothers, DeKalb Jr. and Thomas.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday August 09,2011 at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Mike Mayton officiating. Interment will be private at Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Robbie Belford, Robert Belford, Paul Dean, David Smith, David Smith, Jr., Jamie Smith and Justin Brunk. Honorary pallbearers are Ron Dolan, Charles Orndoff, Karl Tangeman, Herb Taylor, and Jesse Winslow.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 09, 2011 from 12:00-2:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
