James R. Pence

            James Ray Pence, 77, of Winchester, Virginia, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 in the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Pence was born in 1935 in Fishersville, Virginia, the son of the late Reese and Clara Pence.   He was a graduate of James Wood High School and a veteran of the Army National Guard. He was employed at Southern States as a fertilizer truck driver from 1962 – 2000, and he was also Projectionist and Night Manager for the Family Drive-In Theatre from 1963 – 2010. He was a member of Relief United Methodist Church where he was active in the Methodist Men’s Group. He was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins, and coached Little League Baseball for Frederick County Parks and Recreation.

Mr. Pence married Nancy S. Pence on June 9, 1963 in the Relief United Methodist Church in Winchester, Virginia.

Surviving with his wife are two children, Autumn R. Johnston and husband, Jeff, of Olive Branch, Mississippi, and James H. Pence of Winchester, Virginia; three grandchildren, Alexa, Tyler and Clara Johnston; four sisters, Dot Ann Orndorff and husband, Leroy of White Post, Virginia, Golda Evans and husband, Tommy of Middletown, Virginia, Virginia Wright of Woodstock, Virginia and Maudene Woolf of West Virginia, and a brother, Marshall Pence and wife, Barbara, of El Paso, Texas.

Mr. Pence was preceded in death by two brothers.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service on Saturday, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel with Reverend Aaron Fitch and Reverend Mary Locke officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Dalke, Rhodes Marston, Steve Ginn, James B. Douglas, Harman Brumback, Al Mangum, Dennis Sours, Allen Boyd, Monty Shell, Harold Jett, and all of the children he had the opportunity to coach through Frederick County Little League Teams (Servi-Soft & Dodgers).

Donations may be made to Jimmy Pence to benefit the future education of the grandchildren of Jay, 781 Carters Lane, Winchester, VA 22602.

Nancy, I am truly saddened by Jay's death. Jay was one of my favorite baseball coaches that I had the pleasure of playing for. I still remember going out for ice cream after games and to the drive in to watch the movie of the week. Although it's been over 30+ years since those days of Summer with Servi- Soft and Coach Pence, he will never be forgotten. My sincere thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the family.
