Spiz and I also attended UVA together, where we were in Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. I new him best, however, from when I lived in Winchester from 1983 to 1986. Spiz welcomed me to his town and introduced me to his many friends. We had a lot of good times together. He, along with Jeff and Pat Hester, helped me found a non-profit organization to teach parenting skills to abusive parents. He was court-appointed council in a capital murder case, for which he gave everything he had in a losing cause. Spiz was a great friend when I really needed one. My deepest condolences to his friends and family.

Spiz and I attended the University of Virginia together. He was a member of my 1974 pledge class in the Psi Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, and so both a friend and a fraternity brother to me. We shared many happy experiences during our UVA years. Spiz went on to attend Washington and Lee University Law School, as had his father and grandfather before him. He practiced law for many years in Winchester and its surrounding region. Spiz was an excellent attorney and in so doing served his community well. In high school he played the tight end position, and by reputation was one of the best "possession receivers" ever to play football at Handley High School. Spiz was highly intelligent, generous to others and fun to be around. Along with the Phi Sig brotherhood and members of his community, I will miss Spiz always. To his family, my wife and I offer our sincerest condolences. Norman Thomas

I met Spiz back in 1990's. He was so kind to me and helped both myself and my son. I was so sad to learn of his passing. But, I know his kindnesses will never be forgotten. My deepest condolences to his family.

Many years ago, I worked at The Law Firm Larrick, Larrick and Drown. Although I worked primarily for Jamie Drown, I got to know Spiz, which was a pleasure. I found him to be very intelligent, kind hearted and generous. May God's love and peace comfort you in this season of sorrow. Sharon Martin
