James Otis “Jim” Murphy, 89 of Winchester, Virginia passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center.

Jim was born in 1932 in Moultrie, GA to the late Kilby Timothy “K.T.” and Doris Murphy. He was raised by his grandmother Eula Grace Barnwell and his aunt Dolly Barnwell. Jim received his Associates Degree from Blue Ridge Community College and served our country during the Vietnam War as a medic in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1970 with the rank of Tech Sergeant. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Jim went to work at Winchester Memorial Hospital as a supervisor in the laundry, housekeeping, and grounds department. He was a member of the Winchester Elks, American Legion and Moose Lodge as well as the Melbourne, FL Chapter of the VFW. Jim was a Miami Dolphins fan who enjoyed playing poker and drinking Natty Lite.

Jim married Sara Louise Tucker on January 31, 1953 in Funston, GA. Sara preceded him in death on August 1, 2015.

He is survived by his children, Karen Lee Ritter (Greg) of Winchester, VA, Timothy Page Murphy (Sonya) of Clear Brook, VA and Grant Edward Murphy (Shiela) of Anchorage, AK; daughter in law, Darlene Murphy of Clear Brook, VA; grandchildren, Kilby Ritter, Briana Blye, Kristina Smith, Ashley Herndon, Tyler Murphy, Haleigh Sacks, Taylor Murphy and Madison Murphy; and twelve great grandchildren.

Jim is preceded in death by his son, James William “Bill” Murphy.

All services for Jim will be private.

Dear Karen, I was sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was one of the first persons to befriend me when I moved to Winchester in 1972 to take a job at the hospital. I fondly remember the many nights we played poker and at your house, and met you and Greg who were dating at the time. Jim and your mom, Sara, made my transition to Winchester easer. He was a good man. My prayers are with you.

Karen, Tim and Grant please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your father. I will forever remember his stern nature, but also the twinkle in his eye when he was sharing a good story over a cold beverage. Tim and my spring break trip with him and some of his friends has always been a time that I remember and reflect fondly on. Your family in in my prayers during this difficult time.

Mr. Jim will always have a special place in our hearts and will be missed! He was our neighbor here in Georgia and we loved going over to see him and sit around the table to catch up on daily news, the up n comings and on a scale of 1 to 10 how our day was…! In all the years I worked across the hall from him at Winchester Memorial I don’t think I ever called him anything but Murphy. He was a special person & I am blessed to have had the opportunity to know him. Prayers for all of you!
