James Nerangis
James Nerangis, 95, of Winchester, died Monday, December 7, 2009, peacefully, surrounded by family members in Front Royal, Virginia.
Jim was born in 1914, in Corfu, Greece, the son of the late Spiridon and Elpis Nerantzis. He was employed as a District Sales Manager of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, retiring in 1976 with 35 years of service. During World War II, he served as an Air Raid Warden for the United States Army. He was a member of Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, Winchester, Virginia. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Poughkeepsie and Utica, New York.
He came to the United States with his wife, Martha Poulmas Nerangis in 1935 after they married in Corfu, Greece on March 7, 1935. Martha and Jim celebrated over seventy-one years of marriage. She preceded him in death on September 15, 2006.
Surviving are his sons, Spiridon Nerangis and wife, Donna, Nicholas J. Nerangis and wife, Kathy, all of Winchester, Virginia; six grandchildren, Lisa N. Limoges and husband, Robert, Nicole M. Nerangis and husband, Dimitri Batistatos, of Brooklyn, New York, Nicholas J. Nerangis, Jr. and wife, Shelly, Cynthia C. Maragos and husband, Stavros, of Chicago, Illinois, Stephen T. Nerangis and wife, Vickey, and Tamara Haack; eight great grandchildren, Alex, Emilie and Logan Limoges, Katie, Christopher and Julia Nerangis, Panagiotis Batistatos, and George Maragos; nephew, Milton Gialinas and wife, Sandy, of Surprise, Arizona; a sister, Angeliki Mazarakis of Baltimore, MD, and a brother, Tassos Nerantzis of Corfu, Greece. His sister, Penelope Poulos, preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, December 14, 2009, at Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church with Father Stephen W. Gousious and Father Stanley Voyiaziakis officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be, Nick Nerangis, Jr., Stephen Nerangis, Robert Limoges, Tom Butler, Terry Plank, Nick Parthemos, and John Hardesty, Jr.
Honorary Pallbearer will be Milton Gialinas.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Sunday evening at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with a Trisagion service at 6:45 pm.
Memorial donations may be made to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1700 Amherst Street, Winchester, VA 22601.
