James “Jim” McCullough Mills, known by his grandkids as “Caca”, “Peepaw” and “Grandpa”, 75, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026, at Blue Ridge Care with his family by his side. He was born October 28, 1950, in Arlington the son of the late Howard Clinton and Mary Maxine Stieringer Mills.
Jim was a 1969 graduate of Falls Church High School and he started at a young age helping his mom at High’s Convenience Store. Jim then dedicated 31 years of service to the telecommunications industry as a skilled cable splicer, working through the transitions of C & P Telephone, Bell Atlantic, and Verizon before retiring in 2001. Jim also worked as a government contractor from 2001 to 2021. He was an avid New York Yankees and Washington Redskins fan and in his younger days coached football, baseball, and basketball for many years. He also helped to raise his nieces and nephews and always worked very hard to support his family and make sure they never went without. Jim loved to cook. enjoyed going grocery shopping to prepare meals for his family and he always loved cooking Sunday dinners. Above all else he loved and was devoted to his wife, sons and grandchildren and always looked forward to hearing about all the sports that his grandchildren participated in.
He married Betty Marie Reeves on November 7, 1970, in Falls Church, Virginia.
In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by his three sons, Daniel “Danny” Mills (Laura), Shane Mills, and Joseph “Joe/Joey” Mills (Margaret); nine cherished grandchildren, Kyleigh, Joshua, Zachary, Emily, Jackson, Aubrey, Liam, Samantha, and Makayla; his sister, Diane Russell (Terry); his niece, Cheri Wagar; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Jim was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert “Bobby” Fairfax and his sister, Constance “Connie” Hargreaves.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Celebration of Life on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:00am at the Omps Funeral Home, 1600 Amherst St., Winchester with Chaplain Moira Jani officiating. Interment will be private at Flint Hill Cemetery in Oakton, Virginia. In memory of Jim please wear casual clothing or your favorite sports team jersey to his celebration.
