James M. Horton, Sr.
James Morris Horton Sr., 65, of Winchester, Virginia, died Saturday, June 21, 2014, at his home.
Mr. Horton was born in 1948, in Dublin, Georgia, the son of Joyce Horton-Graham and the late Preston Horton. He was a graduate of Dublin High School, Class of 1966 and Middle Georgia College, a branch campus of the University of Georgia, Class of 1970, where he received an Associate’s Degree. He was the owner and operator of Horton’s Nursery and Garden Center in Frederick County. Jim enjoyed being with his family and was a member of Mountain View Church of Christ where he was baptized in June of 1975. Besides Christ, his family was the most important part of his life, especially his children and grandchildren who were his pride and joy. Jim was a devoted son to his mother. He was a very hard and dedicated worker who enjoyed working with his family and always considered his employees as part of his family. Jim also enjoyed traveling with his wife, family and friends, Eddie and Joyce Costello.
He married Nancy Barton on October 16, 1971, in Dublin, Georgia.
Surviving with his mother and wife are his daughters, Rhonda Bradfield and husband, Mark, Becky Stotler and husband, Michael B., Janice Dicken and husband, Brian; sons, Jimmy Horton Jr. and Chris Horton all of Winchester; grandchildren who lovingly know him as “Granddaddy” and “Good Daddy”, Meaghan and Allison Bradfield, Alisa and Jonah Stotler, Emma, Jack, Tanner, Nora and Shepherd Dicken.
In addition to his beloved father and stepfather Ralph Graham, he was also preceded in death, on the same day, by his father-in-law, H. Vernon Barton, Jr. whom he loved dearly.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, at Mountain View Church of Christ, from 6:30-8:30 PM and on Friday at 10:00am.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday at Mountain View Church of Christ with Evangelist Doug Hardman, Evangelist Charles Doughty and Evangelist Brian Dicken officiating. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be his four brothers-in-law, Hugh, John, Donnie and Jimmy Barton as well as Edward Costello and Jeff Mongold.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jims memory to Mountain View Church of Christ, Building Fund, 153 Narrow Lane, Winchester, Virignia 22602.
