James Leland Becker

Date of Death: January 11, 2010

James Leland Becker, 66 years old, of Frederick, Maryland, died suddenly on Monday, January 11. Jim was born in Peoria, Illinois. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Emeline and Leland Becker. Jim was a graduate of Mt. Carmel College and completed his graduate studies at Whitefriars Hall and the University of Notre Dame. He was a member of the Carmelite Order for 20 years. He taught art and theology courses at Carmelite high schools in Chicago and Joliet, Illinois. For the past 23 years, Jim worked as a drug and alcohol counselor at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. Brother, cousin, friend, artist, poet, dreamer, doer, Jim is survived by a large community of family and friends who loved him dearly. His life will be celebrated at 10AM on Monday, January 18, at Church of the Transfiguration, Frederick, Maryland. Donations in Jim’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Very sad to hear of Fr Jim's passing. I worked with him for many years at Joliet Catholic and married my wife and I in 1978. My prayers are with him.

I worked at MGH from 1987 to 1994. I didn't know Jim very well, but he was so friendly and funny, I liked him very much. I'm from Chicago, and my father was from Joliet, so we seemed to have a bit in common. We also had a friend in common - my parish priest at the time (St. James Parish in Charles Town, WV) was Fr. Bert Valdes. Apparently Jim and Fr. Valdes were in seminary training at the same time decades earlier. I thought that was an amazing coincidence. I was looking up Jim tonight to give him the sad news that Fr. Valdes died of cancer on February 18, 2011. But in locating Jim Becker online, I discovered the unhappy news that he himself had died almost exactly a year before Fr. Valdes did, another odd coincidence. May the angels lead you into paradise, Jim and Fr. Valdes. I have many fond memories of you both. Maura
