James “Jim” F. McFarland, 73, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at his home.

Mr. McFarland was born in 1942, in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late Hunter F. and Elsie McFarland. He was a veteran having served for six years in the National Guard from 1964-1970, achieving the rank of SPC 4. Jim’s first job was with Crown, Cork & Seal as a Machinist for 12 years, before moving on to be an EMT with Valley Health Medical Transport for over 16 years, then was employed as a Security Guard with Shenandoah University for over nine years, retiring due to illness. He was a faithful member of Inwood Family Worship Center Church of God where he was a Councilman and Treasurer. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Jim’s motto was “Ya gotta be tough”.

He married Sheila Lewis on February 14, 1992, in Winchester, Virginia.

His first wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Shifflett McFarland, preceded him in death in November of 1988.

Surviving with his wife is his daughter, Terry “Sis” Palmer (Mike); son, James “Jeff” McFarland (Jennifer), all of Frederick County; grandchildren, Samantha Jo Post (Nathaniel) of Stephens City, Abigail Grace McFarland and Hunter James McFarland, both of Frederick County; and his sister-in-law, Kathleen McFarland of Frederick County.

Along with his parents and first wife, he is preceded in death by his brother, Charles Lynn McFarland.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Reverend David Palmer and Apostle Tim Hunt officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Frederick County, Virginia.

Pallbearers will be Leon Bly, Jack Whitacre, Richie Pauley, Larry Dugan, Lyle Dugan and Mark Unger.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Inwood Family Worship Center, PO Box 198, Inwood, WV, 25428 or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Winchester, VA, 22601.

Jim has always been a true servant of God. He will truly be missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.

Truly a great person.

I worked with Jim at Shenandoah University's Public Safety Department. He will be remembered for his kind and courteous service to the students at the Health Professions Building.

I have known Jim for several years. He has ALWAYS had such a positive attitude and ALWAYS had such a happy Smile on his face. He was a Loving and Caring man and everyone who met Jim instantly Loved Him. He will me so missed but never forgotten. Jim was a great guy and will really be missed. I first met him in the 80,s. Haven't seem him since he left the Church on 522. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and want the family to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Jim was a great guy, always uplifting & happy and an absolute joy to be around. Love, thoughts & prayers to his family and friends during this time of immense loss.

My condolences to the McFarland family. I got to know Jim while doing many transports from WMC ( well in the early days it was Winchester Memorial Hospital ) and through volunteer time with the rescue squad . Jim always had a smile and an upbeat outlook on life. RIP Jim. You will surely be missed.
