James “Big Jim” E. Brumbaugh, 82, of Frederick County, Virginia passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017 in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Mr. Brumbaugh was born in 1935 in Lakewood, Ohio, the son of the late Kenneth and Wiltrude Brumbaugh. He was a graduate of Lakewood High School in Ohio. Mr. Brumbaugh continued his education, graduating from University of Miami in Florida earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and French; graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana earning a Master of Arts in Linguistics and a PhC in Uralic Altaic Studies. He was a published technical writer for the Audel Series of manuals and other publications. Mr. Brumbaugh was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving as a Second Lieutenant and then retired from the Naval Reserves as a Lieutenant Commander. He worked as an editor at Radio Liberty in Munich, Germany, and most recently was an adjunct English Professor at Lord Fairfax Community College. Mr. Brumbaugh was an accomplished painter and attended Redland United Methodist Church.
Surviving is a daughter, Laura Brumbaugh of Stephens City, Virginia; sons, David Brumbaugh (Janet) of Gerrardstown, West Virginia and Jim Brumbaugh (Amanda) of Winchester, Virginia; grandchildren, Thomas, Emily, Grace, and Sam; brother, David Brumbaugh of Flagstaff, Arizona; niece and nephew, Michele and Mark Brumbaugh of Flagstaff, Arizona; former wife, Marguerite Fehr; his family in Indiana: Slim Sovern, and her daughters, Jennifer, Samantha, Amanda, and their families.
Jim’s family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 7:00 pm with Pastor Andy Brock officiating. Private interment will be in Mount Hebron cemetery.
