Jack M. Phillips, 93, of Winchester, VA, died peacefully at home on Saturday, October 19, 2019. Jack was born May 16, 1926, in Hagerstown, MD, the son of Isabel! and Samuel Edgar Phillips. He had two brothers Samuel Edgar Phillips, Jr. and Richard Snyder Phillips who preceded him in death.
Jack graduated from Hagerstown High School, attending his Senior year at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania. He soon joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Europe, primarily in Czechoslovakia when victory was declared in Europe. He completed the remainder of his service stateside and was soon working in the accounting department of Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown.
He and Eleanor Brooks “Brookie” Gower were married on August 1, 1947. They were married for nearly 69 years until her death on May 29, 2016. Mr. Phillips is survived by two sons, Jack M. (Marc) Phillips Jr. of Charlotte, NC, and Dwight M. Phillips and wife Marilyn of Westminster, MD, surrogate granddaughter Haley Marie Liu of Gandeeville, WV and several nieces and nephews.
In 1956, Jack was offered the position of Data Processing Manager for American Brake Block Company in Winchester. In the late 1960’s, Jack obtained his Real Estate License and began his fifty year career in real estate with E.E. Bayliss, Jr. Realty. When the firm closed, Jack worked with RE/MAX and finally Long & Foster Realtors.
He was an officer of the First Presbyterian Church, served on the Winchester City Council, the Blue Ridge Board of Realtors, the Winchester Board of Architectural Review, and Board of Zoning Appeals. He served as chairman of the Winchester-Frederick County Chapter of the American Red Cross and was a long-time volunteer for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival and many other causes. For many years he would dress as Santa Claus for hospitalized children and delivered food to families in need, as well as clothing and other presents to their children.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday October 27, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 116 South Loudoun Street, Winchester with the Rev. Dr. Dan McCoig officiating. A reception and light meal will immediately follow the service. Private interment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD.
