Ida Marie Bayliss, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at her home while under hospice care.

She was born to Turner Ashby Martin and Lillian Yowell Martin on September 23, 1935.

Marie was a fun loving and multi-talented individual who played piano and wrote and published a book of poetry. She designed and hand stitched fashionable and detailed miniature clothing.

Marie loved all animals, domestic and wild, and made it her life’s mission to save and care for them.

She married Delmar A. Bayliss in 1953 and they were married for 57 years prior to his death in 2011. They had three children, Kaye Bayliss (George Orrison, IV), Delmar Bayliss (Robert Sigl) and Mark Bayliss; four grandchildren, Hunter Bayliss (Celia), Gracie Bayliss (Andy Erickson), Amelia Bayliss, Maria Bayliss; brothers, Turner “Pete” Martin, William Martin (Raynee) and sister, Jane Roberts (Greg).

Along with her parents and husband, Marie is preceded in death by her brother, Richard Martin.

The family would like to thank Blue Ridge Hospice and Compassionate Care for taking such wonderful care of Marie.

The people and pets at the Winchester Area SPCA send our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Ida Marie Bayliss. The pets have received generous donations in honor of Ms. Bayliss. Though my contact with Marie in the years since my childhood has fluctuated between non-existent to infrequent, and sporadic, I remember my years with her, Deetzie, Kaye, and Mark with lasting fondness. The family was my childhood, and in many ways, Marie was my second mother. She was a defender of all that needed defending. She was witty, mischievous, fun loving, full of life advice, and adventurous. At times she confided in me and she was always there to help me through difficult situations. She treated all on an equal standing regardless of age or social status. It was the best part of my early life to visit her home, spend time with my childhood best friend Mark, his sisters, and be surrounded by all of her animals and the love and joy that filled their home and experience innumerable adventures together. And, I will always remember one piece of advice in particular that became a guiding principle in my life and decision making, “Stick by your guns.”
