Hugh V. Barton, Jr.

                Mr. Hugh Vernon Barton Jr., age 94, of Winchester, Virginia, died Saturday, June 21, 2014, at his home. Mr. Barton was born June 9, 1920 in Edinburg, Virginia, the son of the late Hugh Vernon Sr. and Ora Mae Barton. He was self-employed as an orchardist and farmer, and he made cider for many years. He delivered fruit to the area of Dayton and Bridgewater, Virginia.

 

He was a long time member of the Church of Christ at Mountain View where he served as an elder for 45 years. He loved the Lord with all his heart, and he loved his family.

 

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Hazel Chrisman Barton, whom he married on June 1, 1945 in Winchester, Virginia.

 

Mr. Barton is also survived by his daughter, Nancy Horton (the late James); sons Hugh V. III (Karen), John W. (Gail), Donald L. and James F. Barton; two sisters Margaret Tisinger and Frances Habron; thirteen grandchildren, Hugh V. Barton IV, Brad Barton, Ashley N. Barton, Rhonda Bradfield, James M. Horton Jr., Rebecca Stotler, Janice K. Dicken, Chris Horton, Kevin T. Barton, Kara Keiter, Lauren Barton, Caleb Barton, and Onna Keller; twenty seven great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

Vernon was followed in death by his loving son in law James Horton who joined him in heaven on the same day.  He is preceded in death by two great great grandchildren; brothers Charles Barton,  Stanley Barton, and Fred Barton and his sisters Ruth Coffman, Thelma Vann, Pauline Vann, Ruby Ritenour and Dorothy Kern.

 

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, and again one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

 

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 am at the Church of Christ at Mountain View with Evangelist Charles Doughty and Evangelist Doug Hardman officiating. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mr. Barton’s grandsons.

 

Contributions in the memory of Mr. Barton may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork St. Suite 405, Winchester, VA 22601.
