Holmes D. Smoke, Sr.
Holmes Delano Smoke, Sr., age 78, of Winchester, Virginia, died Saturday, April 21, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Smoke was born in 1933, in Frederick County, Virginia, the son of the late Paul Emanuel and Elizabeth Mae Smoke. Holmes was a hardworking individual who served in many different positions including truck driving for Novick/Hemingway Trucking, owner and operator of C&H Market as well as Jiffy Sandwich Shoppe. He also served as Sergeant with the Frederick Co. Sheriff’s Office. He was a lifelong member of the Fraternal Order of the Police and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge. Holmes was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Stephenson, Virginia.
Holmes married Connie June Huffman on January 26, 1961 in Hagerstown, Maryland. She preceded him in death on December 10, 2005.
Surviving are three daughters, Donna L. Smith of Kingsport, TN, Tacy M. Wilson and husband, Ervin, of Winchester, and Lori A. Forney and husband, Rick, of Winchester; four sons, David M. Grim and wife, Esther, Brian L. Grim, Holmes D. Smoke, Jr. and wife, Wanda, and Paul F. Smoke, all of Winchester; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two sisters, Cheryl Kirby of Winchester, VA and Gloria Jean Testerman and husband, Lee, of Henderson, NC; and one brother, Paul E. Smoke, Jr. of Winchester, VA.
Three sisters, Sarah Glynn, Elizabeth Walden, and Lucy Fletcher, and three brothers, John, David, and Edgar Smoke, preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 11:30 AM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Pastor Jim Smith and Mr. David Owings officiating. Interment will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Stephens City, VA.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
