On Friday, December 15, 2017, Herman Edward Becker, 85, of Falls Church, Virginia, passed away at Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Winchester, Virginia.
Herman was a graduate of George Washington High School in Alexandria, VA. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean conflict as a Conductor.
Herman worked for Capital Airlines, restored artifacts for the Smithsonian, taught high school shop class in the Fairfax County school system, and worked for the U.S. Postal System for 35 years. He was instrumental in the waterfront restoration in downtown Alexandria, VA. Herman was a lifelong historian in many capacities.
Herman loved antique cars, trains, airplanes, boats, and motorcycles. He was member of the Old Studebaker’s Club, Croseley Club and the Cushman Motorcycle Club. Over the years, he restored many Studebakers and loved to take his cars to shows, driving around in his many cars that he owned. Herman was a member of the model train club, WVMGRS, was a pilot, loved sailing – especially his 27 foot Watkins boat. He simply enjoyed anything related to engines and motors and getting his hands dirty. There wasn’t anything mechanical he couldn’t fix.
Surviving is his fiancé, Susan Dickson; his children, David Becker and wife, Eileen; Kevin Becker; Mary Lou Becker and husband, Craig Dessenberger; his grandchildren, Kelly Becker, Matthew Becker, Ryan Becker, Wesley Becker, Chandler Dessenberger; his stepbrother, Edward Becker; his daughter-in-law, Linda Becker; and many nieces and nephews.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Mary Becker; wife, Lois Becker; son, Charles Becker; brothers, Robert and Earl Becker; sister, Jane Grimsley; and his stepmother, Edith Becker.
A memorial service will be at a later date. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery where he will join his wife, Lois.
