Hazel D. Mason
Hazel DeHaven Mason, 88, of Winchester, Virginia, died Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Mason was born in 1926 in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Paul B. and Dorothy DeHaven. She was a graduate of John Handley High School, Class of 1945 where she was active and enjoyed planning class reunions. During World War II she volunteered issuing ration stamps to the public and selling war bonds. In the early 1960’s Mr. & Mrs. Mason with four other couples helped organize Cub Scout Pack #21 sponsored by First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Mason worked as an auditor for Sears Roebuck Co. at the first Sears retail store in Winchester until two days before her son Scott was born. Later she worked at Commercial and Savings Bank as well as worked as a clerk with the Winchester Commissioner of Revenue Office, retiring in 1991. Throughout the years she also worked as a partner with her husband in his business Northern Virginia Auto Appraisal Service for 19 years.
She was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church for over 71 years. Hazel was an active member of Asbury Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women and Esther Circle. She also supported and participated with many other church activities.
Hazel will forever be remembered for her love of her family, friends and traveling as well as her love of her country and community.
She married her beau, Russell O. Mason in 1948, he preceded her in death in 1995.
Surviving is her son, Scott Mason and his partner, Judy Maguire, of Front Royal, Virginia; two grandchildren; Kelly Trask and her husband, Ed, of Richmond, Virginia, Jenny Maguire and her husband, Tom Butler, of Brooklyn, New York, three great grandchildren; Eleanor and Loudon Trask and Brooks Butler Maguire, her sister, Naomi Trenary of Winchester; brothers, Paul Gayle DeHaven and his wife, Betty, of Winchester and Stewart DeHaven and his wife, Susan, of Alexandria, Virginia; Nieces, Cathy Benson and her husband, Chris, of St. Augustine, Florida, Elizabeth Layman and her husband, Robert, of Charlottesville, Virginia; Nephews, Steve Orndorff and his wife, Ginny, of Broomfield, Colorado, Stanley Rhodes and his wife, Patty, of Chesapeake, Virginia, Lloyd Rhodes and wife, Diane, of Finksburgh, Maryland, Kevin DeHaven and his partner, Rebecca, of Huntersville, North Carolina, Paul DeHaven of Herndon, Virginia and Donald Mason and his wife, Jill, of Phoenix, Arizona.
An infant daughter, Annette Maria Mason, preceded her in death in 1964.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 2:00-4:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel with Pastor Kirk Nave and Pastor Tony Layman officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum, Frederick County, Virginia.
Honorary Pallbearers will be her nephews and nieces.
