Harry W. “Dutch” Ebert, Jr.
Harry Windsor “Dutch” Ebert, Jr., of Winchester, Virginia died Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the age of 97.
He was born in Winchester in 1917, the son of the late Harry W. and Isabelle Sencindiver Ebert. Mr. Ebert was a graduate of Handley High School, Class of 1935 and attended Randolph Macon College as well as the University of Virginia. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and began training as a pilot, navigator and bombardier. War was declared while he was in training and he was assigned to a special task force formed to attack Japan from airfields in China. He was later redirected to the European Theatre. On one mission to bomb German installations in Libya his plane was shot down in the desert. He and the crew were later rescued by the Royal Air Force. Lt. Col Ebert was awarded the Silver Star for his part in the bombing of the Polesti Oil Fields in Romania. He later received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He returned to the U.S. and taught celestial navigation at Davis Monthan Army Air Corps base in Tucson, Arizona. In 1945, while in Tucson, he married the former Carol Croy of New York City. At the end of the war they returned to Winchester. He worked until his retirement in the family business, H.W. Ebert Buick, started by his father in 1916.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Elks Club, Automobile Dealers Association as well as Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester.
Surviving with his wife are his daughter, Dee Bauserman and husband, Bill of Winchester; son, Hank Ebert and his wife, Marianne of Roanoke; son-in law, Jim Lyons of Vienna, Austria; 3 grandsons, Bill Bauserman (Karen) of Stephens City, Bryan Bauserman (Sabra) of Strasburg, Keith Lyons of Philadelphia; 2 granddaughters, Beth Strader (John) of Richmond, Kristen Lyons; 8 great grandchildren, Robyn Bonilla, Kate Dellinger, Courtney Bauserman, Carson Bauserman, Lindsey Bauserman, Caroline Bauserman, Jack Strader and Meredith Strader; one great great granddaughter, Addy Bauserman. He is also survived by his sister, Pat Boxwell (Dick) of Winchester.
One daughter, Megan Ebert Lyons and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth “Teedie” Jones and Jean Ford, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, from 6:00-8:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday in the Braddock Street United Methodist Church Chapel with Reverend Kirk Nave officiating. A reception will follow at the church.
