Harold “Hal” “Mac” Leon McDermott, 88, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Thursday, December 27, 2018, at Westminster Canterbury.
Mr. McDermott was born in 1930, in Peebles, Ohio, the son of the late Pauline Clarice and Royce Harold McDermott. He was a graduate of Franklin High School in Ohio; Ohio University – Athens, where he received a BS in Education and Auburn University, where he received a Master’s Degree. Mr. McDermott was a veteran having served in the United States Airforce Reserve retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Mr. McDermott was analyst with the CIA retiring in 1989, having been stationed in Turkey, Taiwan and Germany.
Mr. McDermott was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Rappahannock County Lions Club where he received the Lion of the Year Award and volunteered with Social Services in Rappahannock County.
He married Margaret “Sam” Catherine Fanning in December of 1963, in Washington DC.
Surviving with his wife of 56 years, are his nieces, Kim Gainey (Michael) of Greenville, South Carolina and Sharon Mills (Steven) of Kent, England.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Norma Doolin.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Culpeper National Cemetery, 501 E. Chandler Street, Culpeper, VA, 22701.
A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Westminster Canterbury Chapel, 300 Westminster Canterbury Drive, Winchester, Virginia, 22603.
