Harold “Doc” Frederick Madagan, Jr., 84, of Winchester, VA, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023, at Winchester Medical Center.
Harold was born in 1939 in Winchester, VA, the son of the late, Harold F. Madagan, Sr. and Mildred (Anderson) Madagan. He was a graduate of John Handley High School, Class of 1958 and went on to earn his Bachelors of Science Degree from the Medical College of Virginia (VCU). Since childhood, Harold attended and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Winchester. He was owner/operator and pharmacist for over 50 years of Gaunt’s Drug Store, Inc. in Winchester, VA, he retired in 2014. Harold was chairman of the Winchester/Frederick County Heart Fund for 3 years and was a member of the American Heart Association, Winchester Rotary Club, where he was a member since 1968 and received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award and was also the Chairman of the Shrimp Feed and Fun Bunch, he went through all the chairs and was the past President (1995-1996). He was also the Lifetime Member of the Winchester Moose Lodge 1283 where he was the Past Governor, Past State President of Virginia and he received his Pilgrim of the Order Degree. Harold was a Lifetime Member of the Winchester Elks Lodge 867 where he was a past board member. He was on the board of the Evans Home for Children for 3 years, was a lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge 824 where he served as auditor. Harold was a member of the Shawnee Ruritan Club where he was also on the Board of Directors, a member of the Judges Athletic Association, a member of the John Dove Winchester Chapter Hiram Lodge 21 and was also in the Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons and the Winchester Commandery Knights Templar #12. He was a member of the Jaycees, a member of the Shenandoah Area Council of Boy Scouts, the Shriners ACCA Temple and part of the Virginia Pharmacy’s Association. While attending MCV he served as a member of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Council on the nominations, resolution and convention committee and he was also past president of the Northern Virginia Pharmaceutical Association. He was on the Board for the Free Medical Clinic, past director of Celebrating Patsy Cline for over 50 years, he served on the Massey Cancer Research Committee through the Medical College of Virginia. He was a member of the Woodman of the World and Terrace Club. Harold was the inaugural honoree of the Chamber of Commerce Harold “Doc” Madagan Hospitality Award, an award created in his honor.
In addition to his lifetime achievements, was his passion for keeping Patsy Cline’s memory alive, giving sermonettes about Patsy to all who visited Gaunt’s Drug Store.
Harold married Carol Ann Reed on November 1, 1964, in Winchester, VA. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2011.
He is survived by his daughters, Stacey Ann Madagan Umbenour (Terry), Amy Linette Madagan Haines (Frank); son, Harold “Hal” F. Madagan, III (Josie); grandchildren, Charles “Chaz” Frederick Shull, Taylor Ann Reed Shull, Harold F. “Howie” Madagan, IV, Gavin Parker Haines, Haden Matthew Madagan, Grayson Reed Haines, Harrison Joseph Madagan and Hartley Grace Carol Madagan; great-grandchildren, Maddox Reed Shull and Rowan Alexander Shull; sister, Nancy Madagan Butler and nieces and nephews, Edwina Orndorff, Harry “Brett” William Butler, IV and Morgan Wyatt Butler; brother-in-law, Walter Steven Reed and his loving furry companion, his cat, “Poogie”.
Along with his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his sister, Betty Madagan Orndoff and his loving caregivers, Mary Lou Mauck, Brenda Sloan and Elaine Athey.
A visitation will be held for Harold on Sunday, November 19, 2023 from 12pm to 4pm with a service the following day, Monday, November 20, 2023 at 9am, all held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will follow the interment at the Moose Lodge #1283, 215 E. Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601. Officiating will be Pastor Sean Devolites and Pastor Karen Adams.
Pallbearers will be Charles “Chaz” Frederick Shull, Harold F. “Howie” Madagan, IV, Gavin Parker Haines, Haden Matthew Madagan, Grayson Reed Haines, Harrison Joseph Madagan, Harry “Brett” William Butler, IV, Morgan Wyatt Butler, Randolph Scott Shull and Jeff Mongold.
Honorary pallbearers, Taylor Ann Reed Shull, Hartley Grace Carol Madagan, Dr. Winston Lutz, Ray DuBrueler, Bobby Dick, Jim Grayson, Gene Wise, David Alley, Sheriff Lenny Milholland and his loving caregivers who were like family to him Sharon Huff, Robin High, Dawn Shoemaker, Brenda Olinger, Michelle Richardson Merritt, Paula Pinto and Brandie Patterson Harris.
