Georgia Catherine DeHaven Adams, 100, of Winchester, Virginia passed away peacefully in her home at Winchester Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury on July 16, 2017.

Georgia was born in Frederick County, VA in 1917, the daughter of the late Hutchinson DeHaven and Mary Bell Lineburg. She was employed for ten years in sales by Kinney Shoe Store of Winchester and for eighteen years in the Division of Quality Control of National Fruit Products Company. As a lifetime member of Gainesboro United Methodist Church, she held a perfect attendance record of 14 years in Sunday School, was a teacher of young children, and was co-leader with her husband of the church youth group for many years. She was known in the community as an active volunteer, helping to bake hundreds of fruit pies for fire department fund raisers. Homemade cakes with shellbark icing and African violets blooming on the kitchen table were her signature trademarks in the home. Her notable sewing and gardening talents garnered blue ribbons at the Frederick County Fair.

She married Ernest Washington Adams, Jr. on February 24th, 1937 in the Bethel Lutheran Church parsonage in Albin, VA. The couple made their home on the Adams’ Bicentennial Farm in Gainesboro where they celebrated their 72nd anniversary.

She and her husband were the first in Frederick County to receive the Master Farm Family Award, presented in 1955 by the Progressive Farmers Magazine in cooperation with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute agricultural extension service. The award was made in recognition of high standards in diversified farming practices, leadership, and citizenship. Georgia and Ernest were also the recipients of the Gainesboro Ruritan Senior Citizenship Award in honor of exemplary civic service. As sponsors of a 4-H exchange student from Finland, the couple gained a lasting international friendship.

Mrs. Adams is survived by two children. Her son, Ernest Washington Adams, III (Buddy), and his wife, Ellen F. Adams, live on the ancestral farm in Gainesboro. They have three children – E.W. Adams, IV (Laura Jane), Mark Denis Adams (April), and Laura Adams Mattia (J.P.). Her daughter, Mary Catherine Adams Tudor, and her late husband R. Roberts (Bob) Tudor, of Warrenton, have three children – Cynthia Tudor Patrick (Rob), Thomas Robert Tudor (Annie), and Mary Robyn Tudor. There are ten great-grandchildren: Brittany Adams, Carson Adams, Haley Adams, Allison Adams, Mary Anna Adams, Matthew Adams, Johnny Marcy, Nicholas Patrick, Henry Patrick, and Mark Tudor.

Georgia was predeceased by three brothers – Wilson, Alexander, and William DeHaven, and two sisters, Mabel DeHaven Kirk and Mary Bell DeHaven Adams. Also deceased are two half-brothers, Charles and Harold DeHaven, two step-brothers, Frank and Samuel Brown, and one step-sister, Marylin Brown Chaplin McKee. She leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Georgia took pride in being a member of the Fort Loudoun Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), and of the Turner Ashby Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). A former membership included the Virginia State Horticultural Society.

Following the death of her husband in 2009, Mrs. Adams became a vibrant and independent member of the Westminster-Canterbury community. Bingo was her newfound passion. She was deeply appreciative of the care and friendship shown to her by its many residents, employees, and staff.

The family will receive friends at the Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel on Wednesday, July 19th from 6:30 – 8:00.

A Celebration of Life service will take place in the Westminster-Canterbury Chapel by The Rev. Elizabeth Lewis, Chaplain on Thursday, July 20, at 2:00. A reception will follow immediately in the Abbey. Interment in Mt. Hebron Cemetery will be private.
