George “Billy” W. Shimp, III, 63, of Martinsburg, West Virginia passed away Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Berkeley Medical Center.
George was born in 1953 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of Barbara Shimp and the late George W. Shimp, Jr. He was a graduate of James Wood High School, Class of 1971 and attended Lord Fairfax Community College. George was a veteran of the United States Air Force achieving the rank of Sergeant, having served during the Vietnam era and stationed in Thailand. He was employed at Rubbermaid Commercial Products for 40 years. George loved his work, his family and friends, dog races, as well as Alabama College football and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was an avid NASCAR fan, cheering on Carl Edwards, and enjoyed traveling, especially to Daytona, Florida with the love of his life, Teedie. George was a member of the Winchester Moose Lodge 1283, the Eagles Club Aerie 824 and was of the Christian faith.
Surviving with his mother is the love his life for 25 years, Teresa D. Hopkins; sister, Bridget S. Diehl (Jeffrey) of Stephens City, Virginia; brother, Christopher B. Shimp (Angela) of Stephens City, Virginia; son, Matthew Shimp (Tara) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; stepdaughter, Misty Sanelli (Philip) of Winchester, Virginia; grandchildren, Elijah, Lucas, and Wyatt Shimp of Virginia Beach, Virginia; step-grandchildren, Amber Hopkins, Ashley Franklin, and Nick Sanelli all of Winchester, Virginia; step-great grandchildren, Brigette, Evony, and Ava; nieces, Hilary D. Greene (Christopher) and Kiersten M. Shimp, both of Stephens City, Virginia; nephews, Todd Diehl (Wanda) and Ryan Shimp, both of Stephens City, Virginia; great-nieces, Hannah Diehl, Brooke and Grace Greene, all of Stephens City, Virginia; great-nephew, Cameron Diehl of Stephens City, Virginia; as well as Teresa’s mother, Mary Siers of Winchester, Virginia.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 5:00 PM on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Pastor Mike Mayton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. A reception to continue George’s life celebration will follow the service at The Eagles Club, 700 Baker Lane, Winchester, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of George may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, Tennessee 38148 (a basket will be provided at the funeral home for direct donations to St. Jude’s) or to Winchester SPCA (pet food only), 115 Featherbed Lane, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
