George L. Weidig, Sr.
George Lewis Weidig, Sr., 89, of Winchester, Virginia, died Wednesday, September 10, 2014, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Weidig was born in 1925, in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of the late Walter L. and Kathryn Weidig. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army Air Force, achieving the rank of Staff Sargent. Mr. Weidig owned and operated Georges Grocery in Winchester for over 37 years.
Mr. Weidig was a member of First United Methodist Church in Winchester where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, participated in the Men’s Bible Class as well as the United Methodist Men. George also served many Sundays as an usher and was proud to be in charge of the coffee.
He was a member and past president of the Shenandoah Region Antique Automobile Car Club. He also achieved the distinction of being a 50 year member of Antique Car Club of America. George also was a member of the Isaac Walton League, and the VFW Post #2123. Mr. Weidig was an active volunteer with the Winchester Medical Center Auxiliary, Blue Ridge Food Bank, and the American Red Cross.
He was a loving father, grandfather and friend to many, who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He and his wife were awarded the Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the year award for all their dedication to the community in 2003.
He married Faye Virginia Patton on July 20, 1945, in Greenville, Mississippi. She preceded him in death on April 8, 2012.
Surviving are two daughters, Denise Adams and her husband, Ike, of Winchester, Judy Wiltshire and her husband, John, of Mebane, North Carolina; son, Dr. George L. Weidig, Jr. and his wife, Becky, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; six grandchildren, Jack Wiltshire, Chris Wiltshire, Jenny Stiltner, Vaughan Clark, Sarah Villacarillo, and Kelsey Adams as well as four great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Ryan and Alexander Wiltshire, and Georgia Clark.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, on Monday, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Will White officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hebron Cemetery, where military honors will be afforded by V.F.W. Post 2123.
A reception will follow at The Village at Orchard Ridge.
