Dr. George H. Kessler, Jr.

George Herman Kessler, Jr., 77, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, July 30, 2012, in Winchester Medical Center.

Dr. Kessler was born in 1934, in Utica, New York, the son of the late George Herman and Helen (Goetz) Kessler, Sr. George was a high school graduate of Holland Patent Central School Class of 1952. He then received his Bachelors degree from the University of Rochester where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. Dr. Kessler continued his education obtaining his MD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he was Phi Beta Kappa. He was a Veteran having served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Dr. George Kessler was employed as a Gastroenterologist, practicing in Winchester and retiring in 1996. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winchester. George had many great passions in his life including golfing, skiing, tennis, sailing, gardening and photography. He was also an avid runner.

He married Barbara Edwards on September 1, 1956, in Holland Patent, New York.

Surviving with his wife, is his daughter, Christa Shifflett and her husband, Ray, of Winchester; son, George H. Kessler, III, of Duluth, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Erica and Zach Shifflett, Molly, Anna and George Kessler IV; three sisters, Shirley Opper and husband, Jack, of Rome, New York, Caroline Roberts and Diane Spear, both of Holland Patent, New York.

One brother, James Kessler, preceded him in death.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Friday at Mount Hebron Cemetery. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Richard Reifsnyder officiating.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, from 6:00-8:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

Hi George (III) and family, I was sorry to hear of your loss today. I pray for your family to have peace and grace during this difficult time. Thanks Mrs. Kessler for opening your home to me and our high school buddies "back in the day" when Friday nights rolled around and we would just hang out, play games, etc at your home. I pray you would all know the love of Jesus and find solace in being able to see your loved one(s) again one day in Heaven, where "home" is forever.

We were very sorry to hear of Dr. Kessler's passing, we were patients of his until he retired, he was a very special and kind man, always concerned about us and always took his time with his patients. We feel very blessed to have known him. May our Lord Jesus comfort you during this time. God bless.

I was saddened to see that Dr. Kessler had passed away. I was privileged to be a nurse at the old hospital and worked with him on occasion with his patients. He was a very compassionate man and was very concerned about his patients. He was a very soft spoken man and was always kind to me as a nurse. May you the family be comforted at this time.
