Freida M. Hockman, 88, of Winchester, Virginia passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018, at her home.
Mrs. Hockman was born in 1929 in Gore, Virginia, the daughter of the late Pearl and John Smoot, Sr. She was a graduate of Stephens City High School and graduated from Winchester Memorial Hospital’s first class of practical nurse training, where she was third in her class after successfully passing state licensure to pursue a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Mrs. Hockman was employed at Winchester Memorial Hospital for 14 years and retired from Clarke County Jail after eight years as a Correctional Officer for women and juveniles. She enjoyed reading any kind of book and wrote stories about her childhood, which several were published in the Slice of Life section of The Winchester Star. Mrs. Hockman was a strong supporter of C-CAP by crocheting and donating blankets. She and her late husband, Mack, enjoyed traveling throughout North America, and she was an avid Richard Petty NASCAR fan. Mrs. Hockman was a longtime member of Calvary Church of the Brethren. She was a member of Christian Women’s Club, Women’s Fellowship, and participated in Calvary’s Bible study group.
Her husband, William “Mack” Hockman, whom she married on December 21, 1978 in Winchester, Virginia, preceded her in death in 1997. She was also preceded in death by husband, Lewis Keeler, in 1963.
Surviving are daughters, Billie Sue “Susie” Lewis of Winchester, Virginia and Victoria M. Kave (Robert) of Front Royal, Virginia; son, John R. Keeler (Gail) of Cross Junction, Virginia; stepson, Mark Hockman (Diane) of Winchester, Virginia; eight grandchildren: Wendy, Christina, Benji, Connie, Shane, Amanda, Alexander, and Jeremiah; eleven great grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.
Along with her parents and husbands, Mrs. Hockman was preceded in death by a brother, John B. Smoot, Jr.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 am on Friday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel with Pastor Chuck Davis and Pastor Jonathan Martino officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester, Virginia. There will be a continued time of food and fellowship to follow the interment at Calvary Church of the Brethren.
