Frederick Alvin Gates Jr.
Frederick Alvin Gates, Jr., 93, of Stephens City, Virginia, formerly of LaVale, Maryland, died Saturday, September 3, 2011 in Amerisist Assisted Living, Stephens City.
Mr. Gates was born in 1918 in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, the son of the late Frederick Alvin Gates, Sr. and Noami Gates. He was a dispatcher for the railroad, retiring after 30 years of service. Fred was a graduate of Oakland High School, Oakland, Maryland. He was a member of Kernstown United Methodist Church, and a veteran having served in the United States Army during World War II. He was also active in many organizations including Ali-Ghan Shrine Club, Railroad Retirees Association, Moose, Elks, LaVale Lions Club and LaVale Rescue.
Mr. Frederick was married to Ruth Ault who preceded him in death 1983. He later married Irene Grace Martin on June, 2, 1989 in Cumberland, Maryland.
Surviving with his wife Irene, is one step-daughter, Diane Carney of Richmond, Virginia; two granddaughters, Tiffiney Carney of Washington, D.C., and Megan Carney of Arlington, Virginia, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Wilburn and Mary Hosselrode and two nephews, Cecil and Gilbert Wilburn.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Kernstown United Methodist Church with Pastor Clay Knick officiating. Inurnment will be private in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
