Frances Virginia Ewing Carbaugh of Stephens City, Virginia, beloved wife, mother and grandmother of the Robert Eugene Carbaugh family, passed away on January 27, 2017 while residing at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal, Virginia.
Frances was born in July of 1924 in Stephens City. Her parents were Hazel G. Ewing and Frank Edward Ewing. Frances married Robert Eugene Carbaugh at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester on September 5, 1953.
Frances is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert Eugene Carbaugh of Stephens City; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry Alan Carbaugh and Debra Jane Layman Carbaugh of Stephens City; two grandsons, Jeremy Alan Carbaugh and wife, Mary Elizabeth Huntsberry of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Matthew Scott Carbaugh and wife Christina Marie Trinidad of Stephens City, Virginia.
She is also survived by five sisters and brothers: Thomas Ewing and wife Dixie of Woodbury, Minnesota, Ray Ewing and wife Bettye of Winchester, Virginia, Betty York and husband Ted of Winchester, Virginia, Janet Schaumburg and husband Ben of Greenville, South Carolina, and Donald Ewing of Howard, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Arthur Lee Ewing.
After graduating from Stephens City High School, Frances worked at the Stephens City telephone office in the early 1940’s (she talked about the telephone switchboard all lighting up on Pearl Harbor day with people calling about the attack) and American Viscose in Front Royal in the latter part of the 1940’s until mid 1950’s. She then became a full-time homemaker and mother until the late 1960’s when she began working in the ad composition department of the Northern Virginia Daily in Strasburg. In 1970, she began working at Commercial Press in Stephens City, being the first employee hired, and retiring in 1985 to once again become a full-time homemaker. Frances enjoyed participating in church activities at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and was very active with the Stephens City High School Alumni Association. However, her first priority in life was looking after her family.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday, February 2nd, at Omps Funeral Home on Amherst Street in Winchester.
A funeral service will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stephens City on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 11:00 AM. The Reverend Cameron P. Keyser will officiate.
Pallbearers will be: Jeremy Carbaugh, Matthew Carbaugh, Chip York, Michael Ewing, Pam Janney, and Anna Margaret Ewing. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Ewing, Ray Ewing, Betty York, Janet Schaumburg, and Donnie Ewing.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the wonderful staff at Lynn Care, who cared for Frances since August, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 810 Fairfax Street, Stephens City, VA 22655 or to the Stephens City Fire and Rescue Company, P. O. Box 253, Stephens City, VA 22655.
