Fiore “Jim” Noia, 94, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Friday, September 18, 2015, at his home.
Mr. Noia was born in 1921 in New York City, New York, the son of the late Joseph and Rosa L. Noia.
During the depression era, at age 16, his father died and Mr. Noia quit high school to work helping support his mother and seven brothers and sisters. At age 18, he joined the Civilian Conversation Corps (CCC) and was assigned to Company 282 Camp Rand in the Siskiyou National Forrest in Galice, Oregon. When the United States entered WWII, he joined the U. S. Army in December 1942, at age 21, and was assigned and trained as an artilleryman with the 381st Field Artillery Battalion, 102nd Infantry Division (the Ozarks), at Camp Maxey, Texas and Camp Swift, Texas. He went overseas with his unit serving in Europe, going through France, Belgium, Holland, and into Germany. During the War, he rose in rank from Private to Master Sergeant. After the war, he served two occupational tours of duty in Germany and one tour of duty in Iceland. It was during this time he received his high school diploma from the University of New York. He also served a tour of duty at Fort Sill, Oklahoma prior to being assigned to duty in Winchester, Virginia as a regular Army advisor to the 116th Infantry Battle Group beginning January 1961. After completing his duty in Winchester, he retired from the military in 1964. He took employment at Mt. Weather with FEMA as a Foreman until January 1985, at which time he fully retired.
During his military career, he was the recipient of 17 medals and awards including the Bronze Star, which he earned in the European Theater during WWII.
He married Anneliese Gossler in 1946, in Selbitz, Germany. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2011.
Surviving are two daughters, Diana Haines (Philip) of Winchester, Johanna Mace (Stephen) of Lansdowne, Virginia; son, Alan Noia (Cynthia) of Winchester; four grandchildren, Anneliese McKenna (Matthew) of New York City, J. Seth Haines (Jennifer) of Sterling, Virginia, Eliza Mace of Arlington, Virginia , Michael Mace of Lansdowne, Virginia and one great grandchild, Liam Alexander Haines of Sterling, Virginia.
He is preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 23, 2015, prior to the service, from 10:30-11:30 AM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 AM, on Wednesday, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Reverend Ken Patrick officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia where military honors will be afforded.
