Evelyn V. VanMeter
Evelyn Virginia VanMeter, 95, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, April 18, 2011, in a local nursing facility.
Mrs. VanMeter was born in 1915 in Pansy, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Harry B and C. Myrtle Yokum. She was a supervisor for National Fruit Corp., retiring after more than 40 years of service. Evelyn was a devoted member of Calvary Church of the Brethren with over 65 years of dedicated service. She has participated with Women’s Fellowship, Sunday School teaching and served as a board member. Evelyn was most commonly known for her commitment to the church kitchen, serving her congregation with many picnics, funeral luncheons and potlucks. She also volunteered for numerous years with C-CAP.
She married Orville R. VanMeter on May 16, 1938. Mr. VanMeter preceded her in death on April 18, 1988.
Surviving are two sons, Gary VanMeter and his wife, Laura, and Dave VanMeter and his wife, Sandra, both of Winchester; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a half brother and two half sisters.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday at Calvary Church of the Brethren with Pastor Clarence R. Davis, Jr. and Reverend J. Floyd Wine officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Calvary Church of the Brethren.
Serving as pallbearers will be her sons and grandsons.
