Evelyn C. Shenk

Evelyn Gestava Carpenter Shenk, 97, of Cross Junction, Virginia, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013, in Berkeley Springs Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility, West Virginia.

Mrs. Shenk was born in 1915, in Hampshire County, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Bertha Carpenter. She was a retired Frederick County Public School cafeteria employee and later an Apple Packer with Glaize Packing Shed. Mrs. Shenk was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Reynolds Store, Virginia. She enjoyed working with many church organizations. Evelyn loved gardening and cooking.

She married Elonzo Woodrow Shenk on December 29, 1937, in Frederick County, Virginia. He preceded her in death on October 27, 1979.

Surviving are her sons, Daniel A. Shenk and wife, Mary, Roger W. Shenk and wife, Sue, all of Cross Junction, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Dana Marie Collins, Todd Daniel Shenk, Dwight Elon Shenk, Roger William Shenk, II, Joseph Clinton Shenk, Catherine Hilma Romer, and Mary Evelyn Bilwin; fourteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Herbert Yost of Bunker Hill, West Virginia as well as several nieces and nephews.

One sister, Geraldine Carpenter Yost, preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 AM at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend James Markle officiating. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

Danny & Roger, Sorry to see the loss of your mother. She was something else working around that house. I would watch, while making hay, how she cut grass and worked in that stone filled garden at her age. The little I know of her left me with an impression of how nice a person she was.
