Eugene James Fish, 78 went to be with the Lord on November 18, 2020 at Greenfield Reflections in Strasburg, VA., after a 7 year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Eugene (Gene) was born in 1942 in Albany, New York to Leroy Fish and Regina (Brady) Fish. On June 12, 1965 he married the love of his life Sally (Riker) Fish in Saratoga Springs, New York. They spent 55 wonderful years together. He graduated from Christians Brothers Academy in Albany, New York and graduated from Hudson Valley Community College. For 40 years he worked for Sano Rubin Construction Company as a Superintendent. Gene was a member of New State Carpenters Local 370. In addition he was a NYS Apprenticeship Instructor and the director of the program in his final years of working there. Prior to retiring to Cape Cod, Gene was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar, New York volunteering his construction wisdom when called to do so, and later a member of Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster, Mass. He could be found at BINGO night calling out numbers and encouraging the crowd in a charming way.
Gene had a love for Cape Cod, so much he and his parents purchased a home there in 1978. He spent most of his days at Breakwater Beach with his posse or golfing at Captains Golf Course. In 2005 he and his wife Sally took the plunge and retired there until 2015 when he moved to Winchester, VA.
Gene had a passion for cars, especially Corvettes. He and his best friend Joe Barnes could be found at any car show. He would talk to his son Patrick relentlessly on the phone about cars.
Gene was known to bring stray dogs home from his job sites. You name it and he could tell you about any dog and what they were known for. In his free time, Gene could be found as a volunteer coach for his son Michael’s Pop Warner Football League and the Delmar Little League Baseball. In addition, he coached his daughter Kathleen’s Bethlehem Softball teams for numerous years. Though he was not a great swimmer, Gene would be the first one to volunteer his time and service to the Delmar Dolfins Swim Team.
On any given weekend or game day, Gene was always watching his favorite sports teams: the Giants, Yankees, and Notre Dame.
Gene is preceded in death by both of his parents, as well as his loving granddaughter Caroline Jane Morgan.
Gene is survived by his wife Sally, sons Michael Fish of Albany, New York, Patrick Fish (Marissa) of Windsor, S.C,; daughter Kathleen Morgan (Travis) of Winchester, VA.; granddaughters Allison, Melanie, and Grace Morgan of Winchester, VA.; brothers Peter Fish (Donna) of Mechanicville, New York, Michael Fish (Karrine) of Marietta, Georgia; brother-in law Bruce Riker (Carlotta) of Kingston, New York; and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
A visitation will be November 23, 2020 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be at 3 pm on November 24, 2020 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Winchester, VA with Reverend Stephen Holmes officiating.
