Eric Lee Konopa, 36 of Winchester VA, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center.

Eric was born August 2, 1988, in Bethesda, MD, the son of Catherine Ann Burr, Wayne Leon Burr Jr. and the late Kevin Andrew Konopa. He is a graduate of John Handley High School, Class of 2006. His love for leadership guided him through 12 years of scouting where he achieved the Rank of Life Scout. Eric served our country as a proud member of the United States Marine Corps rising to the rank of Sergeant. During his decorated service he was active in the Global War on Terrorism and served two tours in Afghanistan. While in the Marines, Eric continued to expand his education through college courses and various certificates. He began his spiritual journey through the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Most of all, Eric loved spending time with his friends and family around the world through music, games and celebrating life. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, mischievous demeanor and unending love for family and friends.

He is survived by sisters, Kristine, Kelly, Sydney, Este, and Bree; brothers, Josh, Jeremiah, and Brody; paternal grandmother, Janet Konopa; as well as an abundance of aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends who have become family.

In addition to his father, Eric is preceded in death by his stepmom Terri; sister, Lindsay; paternal grandfather, Michael Frederick Konopa; maternal grandparents, Winifred Mae and John Wendel Hentschel; and great-uncle, Robert James Hentschel.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, June 19, 2025, from 6-8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 11am, with Father Bjorn Lundberg officiating. Interment with military honors will be on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 2pm at Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper, Virginia.

Dear Catherine and Wayne, Sharing Thanksgiving dinner with you all last year was a special treat, catching up with Eric, after so many years, a gift. Later on Phil and I delighted in telling each other the wonderful conversations we had with Eric. We felt blessed to spend time with him that afternoon. I met Konopa online playing video games only a short time ago. His breadth of knowledge and passion during our side conversations always made them enjoyable. Although I only spoke with him for a short period of time, he will always be considered a good friend and will be remembered forever.

I met Konopa a little over a year ago playing Helldivers which turned into a great friendship hanging out chatting on discord and playing other games. I remember him and I just sitting on a hill just relaxing and taking out enemies while our other friend was running around trying to survive in Helldivers. He loved to debate and was very passionate and knowledgeable in what he would talk about whether games or other topics. It was great listening to his points, even putting in my two sense and learning things I never would think about. I am going to miss you man just like the rest of us. Rest in Peace.

Eric embodied all the best humanity. He was thoughtful, compassionate, fun, kind, generous and loving. He was the best parts of his father and the product of being raised well by his mother! He will be sorely missed and thought of often. We Love you Eric ❤️‍🔥

I met him several years ago online. He was so friendly it feels like I have known him much longer. Fondly, one of many things I will not forget is how, during many a discussion, he would tell me flat out I was wrong and then prove it so. It brought a smile to my face every time. Despite having never met in person, he was a large, positive presence in my life.I will miss him. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I met him several years ago online, we hit it off and have been playing games since. I am confident I can speak for everyone in the online group, we all miss him already. It is hard for me to accept the fact that I will never play another game with him. He matters to me and I am sad that my time with him has reached an end. I cannot imagine how his family feels, I will help in them in anyway possible. Konopa more than earned that from me many times over.

Today I’m grieving the loss of someone I never met in person, but who still managed to leave a real mark on my life. We met through games—fighting side by side, laughing through long nights, and just being there for each other in ways that truly mattered. He was a good man, a steady teammate, and a better friend. It's strange how people you’ve never seen face to face can become part of your world. But that’s what he was—part of my world. And now that he’s gone, there’s an empty seat on the team, a quiet on the voice chat, and a space in my heart that won’t quite be filled the same way again. I’ll miss him. I’ll remember him. And every time I log in, I’ll carry a bit of him with me. Rest easy, friend.
