Mrs. Claywell was born in 1922 in Staunton, Virginia, the daughter of the late John and Gertrude Cottrell. She graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia. Mrs. Claywell was a nursing assistant most of her employment years. She enjoyed geneology and farming. Her greatest passion was her family….they were everything to her. Mrs. Claywell attended Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church in Cumberland, Virginia and a member of Newbridge Baptist Church in Sandston, Virginia.
Her husband, Ralph “Jerry” Franklin Claywell, Sr., whom she married in 1943 in Columbia, South Carolina, preceded her in death in 1977.
Surviving are daughters, Martha Kathryn Swann, Dianne Harriette Kidd (Herman) and Susan Orst; son, Ralph Franklin “Frank” Claywell, Jr.; grandchildren, Kimberly Virginia Kidd, Austin Longest Claywell, Tammy Swann Rhoden (Doug), and Wanda Swann Hughes (David); nine great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; nieces, Melanie Bailey and Peggy Claywell Dondero; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Kinzer Claywell.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Wren Cottrell, Martha Byrd Cottrell, and Kathryn Bailey; son-in-law, Herman “Buddy” Swann; and brother-in-law, Bill Bailey.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A second visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Friday at Bliley Funeral Home, 8510 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, Virginia.
A funeral service will be at 2 pm on Saturday at Bliley Funeral Home Chapel, Richmond, Virginia. Interment will be in Washington Memorial Park, Sandston, Virginia.
Emma’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the staff of Greenfield of Berryville for the love and exceptional care that was shown to Emma.
