Elton Roosevelt Hinson, 90, of Winchester, VA, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Elton was born in 1933 in Clarendon, NC, son of the late Joseph Dow and Doretha Gore Hinson. He was raised on a tobacco farm and was a graduate of East Carolina University, earning a BS degree in Science. Elton was a veteran of the United States Army, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was a Science teacher with Winchester Public Schools for nearly 30 years before retiring. Elton grew up in the Methodist faith, served as an elder and teacher at Highland Memorial Presbyterian Church, and later became a member of First Baptist Church in Winchester, where he served as a Sunday School teacher.
To many Elton was known as “Stogie” and was part of the “Shirley and Stogie” duo, with his wife. He married Shirley Lake on May 7, 1960 in Winchester, VA.
Surviving is his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley; son, Jeff Hinson (Jae); grandson, Chad Hinson; granddaughter, Allison Wasser (Troy); and brother, Delmas Hinson.
Along with his parents, Elton was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Hinson.
Elton was the ultimate family man, spending much time with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren for so many years. His gentleness, care, advice, and generosity will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be from 10 am to 11 am on Monday, January 15, 2024, with a service to follow at 11 am at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Dr. Kristin Whitesides. Entombment with military honors will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jerry Turner, Woody Sirbaugh, Chad Hinson, Troy Wasser, Greg Barnett, and Don Search.
