Elroy Mathias, 94 of Winchester, VA passed away Monday, January 3, 2022 at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center.
Elroy was born in 1927 in Shenandoah County, VA to the late Jessie and Bessie Mathias. He served our country during WWII in the United States Navy on the USS Hornet. He retired as a Machinist at Winchester Hosiery. Elroy attended Little Mountain Methodist Church. Elroy helped initiate the Winchester Horseshoe Club and helped build the initial horseshoe pits at Jim Barnett Park, he enjoyed playing golf, especially at Bowling Green and loved to bowl in his senior bowling league at North Side Lanes. He was a wonderful, loving husband of 68 years and a good father of two boys.
Elroy married Patricia Lichliter on January 31, 1953 in Hagerstown, MD.
He survived by his wife, Patricia, son, Mark Mathias; grandchildren, Amanda Hershberg (Philip) and Brett Mathias (Heather); great grandchildren, Brandon Mathias, Madeline and Olivia Hershberg.
Elroy is preceded in death by his parents, son, Jesse L. Mathias; sisters, Vilda Poke and Annetta Lambert; brothers, Derwood and Jerry Mathias.
A funeral service will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 at 3pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be private.
