Elizabeth J. Rose, age 96 of Winchester, VA, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at Winchester Medical Center.
Elizabeth was born, Elizabeth Stevens Blake on May 21, 1927 the daughter of the late Cary D. Blake and Mary R. Blake of Baltimore, MD. She always went by the name Betty.
During WWII, at 17 years old, Betty worked at the U.S. Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren, VA, where she took muzzle velocities on anti-craft guns. She met her husband George Jackson who was in the Navy there. She also worked at the Little Tavern Restaurant, A&P Grocery Store and for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore. Betty transferred to the Social Security office in Winchester in 1976 to be closer to family and retired from there after 22 years of service. For many years Betty was a member of the Winchester Wesleyan Church.
Betty loved going on vacation with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. Betty also loved her two Bassett Hounds and her cats.
Betty is preceded in death by her son, Nelson Rose.
She is survived by her children, Peggy Ann Mitchell (Jack) of Golcanda, IL, Patricia Lynn Arnold (Lowell) of Kents Store, VA, Harry Francis Evans (Joyce) of Winchester, VA, Douglas Lee Evans of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Luke Mitchell, John Mitchell, Kelly High, Nicole Coleman and Benjamin Rose; nine great-grandchildren; daughter-in law, Lilibeth Rose; many nieces and nephews and a host of long-time friends. Betty lived with her son Doug Evans who cared for and looked after her and loves her very much.
All services for Betty were private. Interment was in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum. Officiating will be Pastor Charlie Brooks.
