Elizabeth Davis
Elizabeth Davis, age 83, of Martinsburg, WV, entered into God’s care on January 19, 2012. Elizabeth was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1928, the daughter of the late Searl S. and Leila Frances Corbin Davis. She attended Plattsmouth Nebraska Public Schools and graduated from Brownell Hall-Talbot College Preparatory School in Omaha in 1946. She attended Lindenwood College at St. Charles, MO, and graduated in 1950 from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She was Vice-President of Delta Delta Delta social sorority while there. Elizabeth taught first grade at Longfellow School in Sioux City, Iowa, Grant School in Norfolk, NE, Dundee School in Omaha, NE, and First Ward School in Plattsmouth, NE.
She taught first grade at Burke Street School and fourth and fifth grade at Opequon School, and later was a Homebound Teacher in Berkeley County. Elizabeth earned graduate hours through WVU, obtaining her lifetime teaching certificate.
Elizabeth was a faithful member of Calvary United Methodist Church. Elizabeth participated in other community ventures including the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 66 years (an international education and philanthropic organization), the Junior Civic League, and the Travel Club. In 1976, Elizabeth became a charter member of the P.E.O. Chapter S in Martinsburg, serving as it’s president from 1993-1995. She was a volunteer for “Read Aloud” and “Meals on Wheels.”
She enjoyed playing bridge with many congenial friends, playing golf, reading, and cheering for “her teams”: WVU football/basketball, Nebraska University football, and Washington Redskins football. Elizabeth traveled extensively throughout the US and abroad.
Elizabeth married in 1954, and was married for 33 years. She was a devoted and loving mother.
Elizabeth is survived by daughter Cora VanMiddlesworth and husband Tom of Rockville, MD; daughter Sarah Linder of Knoxville, MD and her fiancé, Sam Balthazar of Spotsylvania, VA; son Zane Linder and wife, Mignon of Stafford, VA; her devoted brother Corbin J. Davis and wife, Lonita of St. Simons Island, GA; nephew Spencer Davis and wife, Vivian of Bellevue, NE; nephew W. Scott Davis and wife, Linda of Lincoln, NE; niece Cynthia Rackley and husband Gene of Sea Island, GA; niece Pamela Davis of St. Simons Island, GA; niece Lisa Davis of Merritt Island, FL; great nephew Scott Morgan Davis and wife, Anne, of Chicago, IL; great nephew Stephen Matthew Davis and wife, Laura of Rochester, MN; two step grandchildren, Laurel and Douglas J. Thoreson. She was preceded in death by brother Stephen Meek Davis and wife, Mary Lou.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Calvary United Methodist Church with Reverend Al Clipp and Reverend Warren Watts officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at Oak Hill Cemetery, Plattsmouth, NE.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cass County Historical Society, 646 Main Street, Plattsmouth, NE, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
