Eleanor “Ellie” V. Palumbo, 93 of Frederick County, Virginia passed away peacefully at her home in The Village at Orchard Ridge on Thursday, June 29, 2017.
Mrs. Palumbo was born in 1924 in Meriden, Connecticut, the daughter of the late Lino and Theodora Volpinari. She graduated from Meriden High School and met her husband, Dom, while working as a mail clerk at New Departure (a branch of General Motors). Ellie’s expertise was in cooking – especially Italian cuisine. She and Dom initiated the annual Sacred Heart spaghetti dinner using her sauce recipe. She spoke in Frederick County Schools’ Home Economics classes on the making of pasta. She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. She enjoyed bowling in the Sacred Heart and Country Club leagues with her team, “Four For Fun”. She was an avid and regular bridge player and also played golf in the Carpers Club Golf League at Shenandoah Country Club.
She was energetic, resourceful and giving, and always wore a smile. That smile, her beautiful eyes, and sense of humor brought smiles out in others and provided warmth in their hearts. Above all, she was a devoted wife and a loving, caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Her husband, Dom Palumbo, whom she married on June 29, 1944 in Meriden, Connecticut preceded her in death in October 1984. Dom was the only man she ever loved. They shared forty years of life together based on their common love of God, family, and country.
Surviving is a daughter, Rosalie Perry (Mike) of Winchester, VA, and a son, Rick Palumbo of Novato, CA; grandchildren, Jay Perry (Carolyn) of Winchester, VA, Clay Perry (Pamela) of Winchester, VA, Maury Brown of Charlottesville, VA, and Stuart Perry (Jerri DeHart) of Winchester, VA; grandson in law, Greg Brown of Charlottesville, VA; seven great grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
Along with her husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Olga Allgaier; and two brothers, Nando and Peter Volpinari.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 130 Keating Drive, Winchester, Virginia with Father Eric L. Shafer officiating.
