I remember Pastor Gillis sitting up on the platform at church in Simi Valley, California with my Dad, Darrell Barber, next to him. They would lean toward each other, say something, and smile down at us kids like they shared a secret. They went out visiting in the community every Thursday evening, sharing Jesus, checking on people. They both loved the Lord so very much. I also remember "praying in the New Year" at the end of each watch night service on New Year's Eve. My Dad was diagnosed with cancer and died young at 39. Pastor Gillis performed his funeral ceremony in Simi Valley. I'm certain this was difficult, even though we all knew Dad was in glory with his heavenly Father. My condolences go out to the Gillis descendants for their loss. Every day fewer persons remain who knew my father. They are and have always been dear to me. I look forward to a glorious reunion in heaven. "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Revelation 21:4

Katherine Gurzi left a message on March 12, 2024:
I first met Johnnie at a little neighborhood church in Long Beach, CA. It was there that we both came to saving faith in Jesus Christ. A few years later, we graduated from BIOLA (Bible Institue of Los Angeles; now Biola University). Johnnie went on to minister in several churches, while I went to South Africa as a missionary. Although Johnnie and I seldom saw each other, the friendship established in our late teens remained strong. In our retirement years, with him in Virginia and me in California, we kept in touch by telephone. I miss Johnnie. He was a gifted preacher and teacher of the Word of God, the Bible, but not superpious to the exclusion of having fun. Knowing Johnnie, he's probably even now teasing the angels of heaven when he's not on his knees worshipping the Lord.

My prayers are with the family during this time of loss. May you all know God’s tender arms surrounding you and covering you with His peace. It has been a joy to visit Johnnie at The Willows and to hear him sing of Jesus’ love. God bless all of you! Mary Ann Gomez
