EDWARD W. WINN
Edward Wilkins Winn, 85, of Winchester, Virginia, died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at The
Willows.
Mr. Winn was born in 1924 in Virgilina, Virginia, the son of the late Norman G. And Dora V.
Winn. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, after which be became a civil servant
for the Navy, working with nuclear submarine logistics. Before he retired in 1984, he received
numerous citations for meritorious achievement for his contributions to the fleet ballistic missile
program. He was revered as a mentor by his colleagues, a patriarch by his family, and paid for
the education of numerous nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Executive Committee
Institute for Government and Public Policy at Shenandoah University.
Surviving are nine nieces and nephews, Charles Edward Winn of Goode, Virginia, Constance
Winn Embrey of Manassas, Virginia, Linda Wagner Thurman of Middleburg, Ohio, Joyce
Thomas Horner, Dwight Thomas, and Deborah Thomas Saylor, all of Parma Heights, Ohio,
Gregory Vance Winn of Richmond, Virginia, Ann Winn Butler of Aldie, Virginia and Andrea
Winn Hale of Richmond, Virginia, and their families, including many cousins and close friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda G. Winn Thomas, and two brothers, Norman G.
Winn, Jr. and Donald Vance Winn.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst
Chapel with Reverend Steve Melester officiating. Interment will be in Amherst, Virginia.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Institute of Government and Public Policy of
Shenandoah University, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 to
2:00 p.m.
