Dr. Thomas Christ “Tom” Apostle, 85, of Winchester, Virginia, departed this life peacefully and surrounded by family on Saturday, December 22, 2018.

Tom was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1932, the only child of the late Christ Peter Apostolopoulos and Olga Theophanellis Apostolopoulos. Tom attended Washington University in St. Louis for his undergraduate studies and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa in 1954. He graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1958.

In 1961, he completed his anesthesia residency at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He then served two years as an Officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, stationed at Sandia Base Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tom returned to Charlottesville in 1964 as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesia at UVA. He then served as a staff anesthesiologist for 2 1/2 years at Kings Daughters Hospital in Staunton, Virginia.

He joined Drs. Braunschweig, Stickley & MacLellan in private practice in Winchester, Virginia in 1967. Their practice incorporated as Winchester Anesthesiologists a few years later, and Tom served as their Secretary for 24 years. He was the first Board Certified anesthesiologist in Winchester.

Tom was an active leader in and advocate for his profession, serving as President of the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists from 1984-86 and as a delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists House of Delegates, 1984-95. He was involved in his community and was a member of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, serving as Treasurer for a number of years.

After 28 years of practicing medicine in Winchester, Tom transitioned to an active retirement. Favorite pastimes included traveling the world with his wife, Edwina, doting on his grandchildren, and spending time with friends. The ultimate do-it-yourselfer, Tom enjoyed building things in his workshop, tinkering with anything mechanical, doing home repairs and renovations, indulging his Greek heritage, and mixing a mean cocktail.

Tom’s life was an admirable model for his children and all who knew him. He was a dedicated and talented doctor who cared for others, a valued member of the community, a committed friend, and a devoted son, husband and father – family was everything.

Tom married Mary Edwina Moss on October 19, 1962 at the Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. In addition to his wife of 56 years, Tom is survived by his three children – Christopher (Derek), Beth (Bert), and Andrew (Tiffany), and six grandchildren – Adrianna, Sara Parker, Colleen, James, Richard, and Aidan.

The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel on Friday, January 4 from 6:00-8:00 p.m., with Trisagion services at 7:45 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, January 5 at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1700 Amherst Street, Winchester, Virginia, at 10:00 a.m. with Father Michael Kontogiorgis officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery with military honors. A buffet luncheon will follow at the Winchester Country Club.
