Douglas Lloyd Elgin 76 of Winchester, VA passed away Saturday, February 19, 2022 at his home.
Doug was born in 1945 in Bassett, VA, the son of the late Lee Roy and Alma Lillian “Lill” Elgin. He was a graduate of Bassett High School, Class of 1963 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Bluefield State College and then received his Master’s Degree in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. Doug served our country during the Vietnam War in the United States Army. He worked as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Therapist at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville, VA (now called Sovah Health) and retired as a Social Worker and Director of Utilization Review at Danville Memorial Hospital, Danville, VA. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he was President of the Parish Council and then went on to a two year pastoral counseling program. Doug loved reading the Bible and was very well versed. He helped with the startup of the Hospice group in Danville. Doug was a Los Angeles Lakers and New York Yankee’s fan that made the pilgrimage to Yankee Stadium before it was torn down. He enjoyed music, playing his guitar, going to concerts and especially enjoyed traveling with his family.
He married Mary Frances “Fran” Critikos on January 5, 1974 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsville, VA.
Doug is survived by his wife, Fran; daughter, Theresa E. Elgin of Lebanon, TN; son, Chris D. Elgin (Meranda) of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Brayden Elgin, Skye Bonhams and Haleigh Rigney all of Winchester, VA; great grandson, Saint Morelli of Winchester, VA; brother, Wayne Elgin of Bassett, VA; nieces and nephews, Jimmy Marzi of Baltimore, MD, Billy Marzi of Mechanicsville, MD, Johnny Vogt of Maryland, Christy Luis of Towson, MD, Dustin Elgin of Bassett, VA, Andrew Elgin of Bassett, VA, Susan Beth Accord of Beckley, WV and Tony Cline of Staunton, VA.
A service will be Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 4pm held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
